Charity initiatives 💛

Union Square are proud to work with local charities and organisations to provide a platform and support to help raise awareness of the incredible work they support our community with.  On a weekly basis, several members of the Management Team go through each request to ensure we can match the requirements and expectations.  Here’s just a few of the charities we've worked with so far this year:

Friends of ANCHOR volunteers

FRIENDS OF ANCHOR COMMUNITY visited us in January and achieved some fantastic results, including:
23 new recruits for its red army,
6 new monthly donors,
11 new volunteer sign-ups,
350 comic books given out to visitors,
450 sticker trails completed,
11 of our retailers and 14 restaurants involved in the campaign,
£250 raised through face painting utilising text message donations and
approximately £200 received by the charity following the centre campaign.

Aberdeen Multicultural Bollywood dancers

We welcomed the dancers from ABERDEEN MULTICULTURAL CHARITY who performed a patriotic Bollywood dance fusion to honour the 69th anniversary of the Indian constitution, which came into effect on Republic Day, January 26, 1950.  Did you see it?  It was spectacular!

The Big Noise Torry

THE BIG NOISE TORRY delivered a great string orchestra performance and the charity managed to recruit several volunteers as well as interest local kids in their music lessons.

Alzheimer Scotland fundraising

Three local dance groups performed for our shoppers, as organised by ROBERT GORDON UNIVERSITY event students: MAITLAND AND SEIVRIGHT, SHARRON SORRIE’S DANCE DIMENSIONS and KERRY WATSON’S STEP UP STUDIOS. £80 was raised during the one-hour event and 200 leaflets inviting people to the main event were handed out. The main event generated a whopping £2,049 for ALZHEIMER SCOTLAND!

Making the most of our outside promotional space, volunteers from MARIE CURIE’S DAFFODIL APPEAL spread some cheer whilst local musicians entertained inside the mall as volunteers and nurses provided information about the services the charity provides.  Some visitors were lucky enough to meet the daffodil mascot and take couple of cool selfies! Marie Curie raised amazing £874.49 on the day!

We donated £449.22 to CHARLIE HOUSE in January – half of the amount was raised by the centre management team through Christmas raffle and half was match-funded by Hammerson Plc. Charlie House also secured a free hire of our meeting room for their Ambassador lunch.  Feeling good with delicious food and doing good for those in need!

CLAN CANCER SUPPORT requested a donation of coat hangers from the centre’s retailers. This not only helps the charity equip their shops but it also helps eliminate them from the centre’s waste stream as they can be difficult to recycle.

Little Princess Trust hair cut

Our very own Sarah, Environmental and Community Coordinator, cut her gorgeous long locks (35cm of it!) for the LITTLE PRINCESS TRUST in Saks Hair & Beauty, Union Square, who are providing free haircuts to support the charity, with a minimum donation of £10.  The donated hair is used for making wigs for children and young adults up to the age of 24, who have sadly lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses. Sarah has raised fantastic £124 within the centre management team which we hope will be match-funded by Hammerson!

Students of the third year of Environmental Resource Management at SCOTLAND’S RURAL UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGE visited Union Square to receive a talk on the centre’s Environmental Management System, Hammerson’s Net Positive Strategy and Positive Places Plan.  A brief visit to the control room and service yard also took place providing an overview of environmental incident investigation procedure and centre’s waste management strategy.

The Union Square team continues to support ABERDEEN FOYER’S R.E.A.C.H program in 2019.  This is a partnership spanning over many years involving several members of the management team facilitating mock interviews to build up confidence and experience of an interview environment.

We are proud of the services SHOPMOBILITY, located on P1 of our car park, offer to the community and were delighted to be part of the MAKING CONNECTIONS project along with TRANSPORT SCOTLAND, GO UPSTREAM, disability groups and other partners. We explored the accessibility of the connection between Aberdeen train station and the NorthLink terminal and assessed the role of Union Square Shopping Centre on this journey.  This valuable feedback has been filtered back to our senior management team and will be integrated into our wayfinding upgrade of signage and directional communication – keep your eyes peeled!

LED lighting

LEDs? LEDs! Union Square has replaced majority of the mall lights for LEDs throughout 2018. Since completion of the project, the centre has been saving on average 20% of energy consumption each month!  That’s not all, this year alone, we are delighted to have saved:
73.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide,
278,872 litres of water,
684 plastic bottles and
787 plastic bags in the first quarter of 2019
