Union Square was taken over by local charity Friends of ANCHOR this weekend with fun for all the family including a silent disco, sticker trail, face painting and colouring-in booklets.
Friends of ANCHOR has served oncology and haematology patients throughout the North-east of Scotland, including Orkney and Shetland, since the ANCHOR Unit opened in 1997. The founding aim was, and remains to this day, to provide the best possible treatment, care and support to patients. In the last five years alone, Friends of ANCHOR has invested £4m directly into research, equipment and wellbeing within the Foresterhill Health Campus.
The weekend event at Union Square marked the launch of their ANCHORED together appeal aiming to raise at least £2million for the new ANCHOR centre set to open in 2021. It will be the first of its kind in Scotland, bringing together haematology and oncology patients including those with non-malignant disorders. The newly built facilities in which the Scottish Government is investing £32million will serve 65,000 patients a year and 250 patients every day.
The ANCHORED together appeal hopes to engage the public in volunteering and fundraising activities. And this was the task of the weekend event – to reach as many people as possible. Kids visiting Union Square’s restaurants were given the Friends of ANCHOR booklet with a comic explaining the mission of the charity, colouring-in and a competition to design their own superhero. The anchor sticker trail guided the kids through the entire centre visiting stores including: Catch Kidston, Jack & Jones, The North Face, Joules, FatFace, Deichmann, Superdry, Next, Boots and Marks & Spencer. After completing the sticker trail, the lucky winners could collect a sweet treat in the atrium where they could also get their faces painted and enjoy the silent disco. While the kids were having fun, parents learned more about The ANCHORED together appeal and the volunteering opportunities available. The Friends of ANCHOR team were delighted with the volume of cash and time commitments and all who generously donated were snapped and featured on the ANCHORED together wall.
Union Square is proud that the Friends of ANCHOR chose our mall for the launch of the campaign and we look forward to welcoming them back in summer for another weekend of family fun. Keep an eye on our social media for more!
