College Street multi-storey car park is to undergo a series of improvements as part of the £250m Union Square retail and leisure development project. Works started yesterday (20th July) and will involve the replacement of the lighting on the eight upper levels of the car park - levels six to thirteen.

Areas of the car park will be sectioned off between 8am and 5pm to allow the works to take place.

Additional work will start at the beginning of August and will see the redecoration of the car park. Works include the re-painting of white lines, painting of ceilings, walkways, stair cores and floors, as well as the painting of metal work and the replacement of windows in the stair cores. CCTV cameras will also be upgraded and the car park lift will be replaced.

Motorists are advised that when work to the lift is underway, the sixth floor will be open only to blue badge holders and parents with children to allow access to the railway station. With effect from the beginning of August there will be no access to upper levels of the car park from 6pm at night. Motorists that have parked during the day will be able to exit the car park. Signs will advise the public of arrangements during this time.

It should be noted that the ground to fifth levels of the car park will operate as normal during the upgrade works.

Guy Wells, Development Manager at Hammerson said: "The car park improvements will complement Aberdeen's newest and largest retail and leisure development, Union Square. The works will revive College Street car park, ready to welcome shoppers come autumn this year."

The improvements follow upgrade works which were carried out in 2007 from the ground floor to the fifth floor.
